MP3 is a format of storing music electronically. MP3 players will only play this format only.

You can think of MP3 being similar to how .jpg and .gif are both formats for electronically storing images, and .pdf is an Adobe Acrobat file. They are all storage "formats" and they are all 'file extensions', even .mp3.
