how do you know what body language will tell you if somebody is lying to you?

People normally move around a bit. They look at other things, fidget, and so-on. When a person is purposefully lying --that is, to get away with it, they put on a poker face and stay very still. They're concentrating on passing off the lie and not on what a normal person would look like.

A good liar looks normal. They move around, look at things, smile pleasantly, and unless you're in the know, you won't know.

Usually, you can tell whether they are lying by the person's eyes so check if he/she can hold eye contact with you. However, some good liars are able to hold eye contact while lying, so perhaps you can observe the way they talk to see if it's any different from usual. Also some people may gesture excessively while lying due to nervousness. Most importantly, i think your instincts play a huge part in determining whether someone is lying to you so you have to use your judgment

Just watch their eyes and how they move the rest of their body. If they shift around or turn their body away from you when you ask them a question, they may be lying. Keep in mind, though, that reading body language may not always be accurate and you maycause more damage if you make a false accusation. Good luck!

Actually, I think some people can lie pretty good, and that is scary. My favorite story is about a guy I dated years and years and years ago who told me he was only seeing me. I had heard he was cheating on me. Luckily I didn't adore him (yet), but our feelings were growing and we were in a one-on-one relationship that was great. But his close friend respected me and knew he was cheating, so he told me. So this guy (my ex-boyfriend!!) told me he was loyal to me and was shocked I even asked him whether he was or not. I was tipped off to go to his home on a certain day and time, and when I did, he was shocked because I obviously came over when he had a regular "appointment" with another girl who visited him a few days a week!!! Yes, that sucked the respect I had for him right out of me, and I was relieved to find out he was a jerk. But looking back, he lied really good and I could not tell. So even though I think I could recognize a liar, in the case of my ex-boyfriend, he should have won an Academy Award for acting convincingly!!!

Their eyes give it away. If they can't look you straight in the face their lying but their are some people that can master that...so I guess you just have to use good judgement
