What can I do for relief when I've hurt my lower back?
The best position for relief when your back hurts is to lie on your back on the floor with pillows under your knees, with your hips and knees bent and your feet on a chair, or just with your hips and knees bent. This takes the pressure and weight off your back.
If you're resting a hurt back, you may need 1 to 2 days of this sort of rest. Resting longer than this can cause your muscles to weaken, which can slow your recovery. Even if it hurts, walk around for a few minutes every hour.

What else can I do for relief?
Heating pads can help to relax painful muscle spasms. Use heat for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Ice packs and massages may also give relief.

Nonprescription medicines that reduce pain or swelling include aspirin, acetaminophen (brand name: Tylenol), naproxen (brand name: Aleve), ketoprofen (brand name: Orudis), and ibuprofen (brand name: Motrin).

Call your family doctor if:
Pain goes down your leg below your knee.
Your leg, foot, groin or rectal area feels numb.
You have fever, nausea or vomiting, stomachache, weakness or sweating.
You lose control over going to the bathroom.
Your pain was caused by an injury.
Your pain is so intense you can't move around.
Your pain doesn't seem to be getting better after 2 to 3 weeks.

Is there relief for ongoing back problems?
Treatment of ongoing back problems must be directed at the cause. This may mean losing weight (because being overweight can make back pain worse), getting your muscles in better shape, and improving your posture when you're sitting, standing and sleeping.

First off... A chiropractor cannot do anything with a ruptured disk. No matter what anyone says - A chiropractor cannot fix a disk that has bulged. It is not a muscular/skeletal problem. You need to see a Physician/Medical Doctor.

I had a ruptured lower disk and bouts with locking up use to happen quite often. I use to bear the pain for a few days, normally about a week, then it would clear up on its own till the next time.

And yes, the Scrotal holder as mentioned above will work to an extent. It is similar to a Jock.

Have you been to the doctor yet? They will try having you take some anti inflamitory meds such as, such as naproxen (Naproxen is a proprionic acid derivative related to the arylacetic acid group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). You can get that over the counter then just double the dose wich will normally equal a prescription dose.

If the meds dont work, they will shoot you up with a steroid shot right into the effected location. I guess they can give that to you only 2 times in your lifetime. That is suposto help out and give plenty of relief.

Finally, if nothing else works, do what I did and have the surgery. It's really not that bad at all. I was back on my feet the very next day (limited) but the pain I went into the hospital with was gone.

One of the major draw backs is that now they have limited me to lifting 75 lbs. I am back on my feet, playing softball and doing a lot of other activities. I have not had any major pains in the past 5 years. I am always cautious on what I do. For example... I won't jump on the trampoline with the kids.

Good Luck

Go to a Chiropractor to get adjusted. This may take several weeks of therapy. There is a product you can use called BioFreeze. It is a cool - heating agent and works w/in minutes. It also does not have a noticible odor, by others. Its a wonderful product. You can get this by a provider of the medical field. Also...stretching helps to strengthen and allow circulation to muscles that may be overworked to compensate where your back is weakened and favors a wounded area. Lying on your back on a solid surface. Hold your knees to your chest and secure w/your arms hugging around them to hold them in place for up to 5 reps of 30 seconds. Try it all. It works. You'll be on the mend in no time. If you don't have insurance..you could probably count on $35 each visit for care at the Chiropractor. Explain this to the Chiropractor upfront, if you need to go private pay..most doctors work w/you on a payment arrangement that both of you can agree on. The Chiropractic practice was not recognized and often scrutinized as not being valid medical care. Untrue. Many studies show the actual validity of this practice. Do your homework. Good luck!

Ask your doctor, but you might find a lumbar sacral support helpful. It's like a girdle and yes you might feel a bit silly at first wearing it, but after wearing mine for a few years my back troubles seem to have vanished and I no longer wear it. I think you can only get one by prescription from your doctor so that's where you should seek advice on your back pains.

Make an appointment with a kinesiologist, typically a chiropractor who has studied the human body from a structural and movement perspective.
