Your employer has asked for your input on filling a crucial executive position in a country where females have been historically oppressed and relegated to the lowest-paying and most demeaning jobs. What's more, if this position is not filled immediately, the company risks the loss of a multi-million dollar business contract. However, the most qualified candidate by far happens to be a woman. So what advice would you give your employer?

Do the right thing and make the proper recomendation. If the applicant finds she has been discriminated because she is a woman she can file suit, against you and the company.

That's a sticky situation to be in. Here are some objective thoughts/questions/opinions/concerns on the situation:
1. If the woman were to take the position, would she be physically safe in the country?
2. Who would her clients be, men from that country or foreigners outside of the country or ex-pacts.
3. Where is the corporate headquarters? If US based or European based, sending a women could be great PR for your business (selfish but true).
4. Would it be possible to send a man as an assistant with the women? The woman for the brains, the man for the face (know what I mean).
5. Go on-line and find an ex-pact web site in that country and get their opinion. Very easy to do, they have chat rooms. They will be able to give you a more realistic answer to your question.

This is a big risk for the company and for that female executive to be hired with regards to that country's stand on women.

But if the company could give a guarantee of her safety and that they have the support of the local police of that area and most of all the staff that she'll be handling then I guess it is worth the try, ohter than that if there is no guarantee of safety at all both in and out of work I guess the company has no other recourse but to send a man for the job.

It is critical that you keep your choice within the culture of your company....now is not the time to go out on a limb! The female may be most qualified to perform the duties required, however if those around her do not perceive her as acceptable she has lost before she began...in short this could not only be a bad step for you, but an even worse one for her....this type of change in culture needs to happen over time...not during a critical/risky time in the companies future..

Sounds to me like you know the answer - the PERSON most qualified... there was a time in this country where we had similar situations... one woman here... one woman there... someone has to start to break the pattern. You may not be seen as giving the best advice, but if they wanted a puppet to just rattle off what they wanted to hear - you think they would put a sock on their hand and do it themselves. They came to you and asked you a serious question and for your valued oppinion - by all means give it to them.

Hire the most qualified candidate. Why hire an incompetent man in place of an overqualified woman? That's bad business - not to mention morally wrong.
