If you are in the UK, ignore the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th answers, which look transatlantic . They use different wiring conventions over there. All I can add to the first answer is that, if your spotlight has a flexible cable with brown and blue inner wires, then the brown is for the live (so connect it to the red in your house cabling) and the blue is for neutral (so connect it to the black). Modern house cabling now comes with brown and blue inners, rather than red and black.

Somtimes electricians will use the wire as just a switch leg and the typical hot wire will not be the typical hot wire. I'm not trying to confuse you here, just save you from getting shocked. Take a minute and a couple of bucks and invest in an electrical tester. You can get one of the ones that looks like a fat ballpoint pen. It lights up and beeps when you touch the hot wire. No questions about it then. Wouldn't hurt to shut the breaker off either once you determine what is what. An ounce of prevention...........
Good luck.

You must be looking at wires for a 3 way. Red is hot, black is hot and white is neutral. Coming from a normal switch would be just black, which is hot and white which is neutral and of course green or just copper is ground

WHITE is the neutral on 120 volt fixtures and is connected to the screw shell of the socket. If it has a photo cell built in the black is connected to the LINE IN and RED is connected to the bottom button of the socket.

the black cable is neutral and the red is live. Get a qualified electrician if you do not know what you are doing.
