I hate this question, the typical 'describe yourself in 5 words' interview stock. I have even refused to anwer it in the past. It is so insultingly reductive, I never know what people are expecting to get out of asking this question, to be honest. If at an interview I would probably say, hard working, friendly, punctual, blah blah blah. That wouldn't tell anybody anything about who I am, but it would tick the boxes on thier 'desireable' checklist.
The fact is who you are is in a state of constant flux, can change according experience, age, to who you're talking to to an extent, and in a miriad of different situations. To say it is limiting to try to describe this would be a massive understatement, and for someone to ask you to polarise yourself in this way is futile and would produce a largely inaccurate, dishonest result.
As a final note, people are more than capable of making their minds up about who you are without any help. In fact, I feel they would often totally disregard it, as most people are vain enough to think that they are capable of making the 'true' assessment of another person. What I think about myself matters little to other people. It only matters to me, which is why I choose to keep it to myself.

Great question!!

Most people identify themselves by their work, even in non-work (social) settings. Whenever they meet someone new, they identify themselves as "I'm John Doe and I am an engineer working for ABC company."

I used to do the same....however, I strongly feel that people should identify themselves by what makes them happy or satisfied or what they are passionate about!! It may be sports, their children/spouse or their hobbies.

P.S. and if work makes people happy then they should identify themselves by their work!!
