My crowntail betta's tail is all missing! What happened? It was there when I cleaned his tank on Friday. Is he sick? Does he need something???

and is this contageous? He shares a fish net and temporary bowl (where he goes during tank cleanings) with his next door neighbor betta.

And this little guy is ALWAYS stressed. He freaks out when I feed him. I have purchased a hiding rock for him, plants, whatever i could just to give him a place to hide and be calm. could it be "tail rot"?

sounds a lot like tail rot, I'd treat him for it to be safe, and probably treat your other betta also to be safe. boil the net and clean the temp. tankl very well. all pet stores sell stuff for tail or fin rot, just be sure you buy one for tail and fin rot and that it is for tropical fish. it usually says to do two treatments, so if by the second treatment you do not see regrowth (it usually looks like a bit of clear fin around the edges of the fin, it take a while for it to grow back wholly. and when it does it's often different than it was originally) try adding one or two more drops, but no more than two more than recommended. after two treatments it's usually gone and regrowth should start.

hope that helps!

I would be worried that this is a bacterial or fungal infection. Yes, sometimes bettas will drop their fins due to stress and/or age, but fin rot and columnaris can also eat away the fins. These are very contagious bacterial infections, so if your betta looks or acts sick in any other way aside from the missing fins (sluggish, white film on body, other fins looking shredded, etc.), I would treat him with aquarium salt and a combination of Maracyn and Maracyn-2. If he isn't showing any other symptoms of disease, I would still add 1 tablespoon of freshwater aquarium salt per 5 gallons of water and treat his water with some Melafix to help him regrow his fin and prevent him from developing an infection because of the damage. Don't let the other betta share water with him, to prevent the other betta from catching any possible infection.

Fish can lose fins especially betta's tails when they are stressed. When they fall off a male betta will many times eat the tail as to not be threatened by its intrusion in his territory.

Its is rotting, getting eaten by bacterias that are harmful to him. I have the same problem right now, I'm using Melafix to stop the rotting, try it!
And do make sure to keep water clean, change about 25% every week and add a water conditioner to help its fins grow back.

Bettas tails can get damaged by a net or stress. So when you cleaned teh tank it could have gotten really stressed and it could have fallen of!

Sometime their tails break off when they are "stressed." Did you do something different when you cleaned his tank? Did you use a cleaner? Anything can cause "stress."

Well hopefully the two betta's are not together because they are fighter fish and will fight til one is dead. If together I would seperate them. If not together it may be a condition called, tail rot. You can go to any pet store and get medicine for it. . There is a item called Maracyn-2 that may help
