Like when somebody asks you 'How are you?' and you say fine when things are not fine.

If people would say what they were truly feeling, wouldn't a great deal of stress dissipate?

I'm not sure that this is a good example.

What you're talking about here is social grease that keeps things moving smoothly.

And, really, do you want everyone to whom you say a causal "Hi, how're you doing?" to stop you and tell you all about their life nad health and stuff lke that?
