securing their perimeter, making sure no enemies are around before they settle down for the night. Seriously, it's a left over trait from eons ago.

Mainly dogs and cats do this because it is a natural instinct that they developed from their ancestors. Wolves and big cats do the same in the wild, it's sort of a "checking it out" mechanism. It's to make sure that one: they don't sit on anything that could be painful; two, the bigger, wilder animals also do it to basically make sure that the coast is clear from any type of possible predator or anything out of the ordinary, before they sit and put their guard down.

Why do all humans lay down to go to sleep in one position, knowing that they will eventually have to turn/flip/move over before they will fall asleep? lol I have no idea to your question, or mine! why don't we just automatically find the position we know we always fall asleep in? lol at least everyone that I ask admits, they usually lay down in one position at first and then chane it before they can sleep...

we are creatures of habit, just like animals turning circles.. lol

Funny question. I wish I knew the answer to that too. Humans are the same way, kind of. We toss and turn before we finally settle into a position.

animals go around in circles and take their claws out at the same time so when they do that that means they r trying to get comfortable so when they do go around in circles they take out their claws.

It goes back to when they had to clear a spot to sleep on the ground. Lots of other animals do it too.

Mine seem to do it to get comfortable. My cats fluff the spot, my dogs turn in circles. It's gotta be comfy!!

It is as simple as they are trying to get comfortable, and feel what they are about to sit on or lay on.
