As you probably have heard by now the pinging of the engine is caused by what is called preignition. This generally happens !: if the fuel you are using is not a high enough rated gasoline, if you are using 87 octane try 89 and see if that stops the pinging. You can even go to 92 but that of course is much more expensive.2: if the timing of your engine is advanced too much this will cause pinging, have it checked by a mechanic, only takes a minute.3: if the engine has a lot of carbon build up in it ( lack of highway driving) this too can cause preignition thus pinging. You can get a good engine detergent to clean out the carbon, Chevron gas has the best detergent in their gas "Techron" this should prevent carbon build up. Check these out, one should be the culprit.Your engine is probably equipped with an antiKnock sensor which could also have failed and would need replacing.

your mass airflow is not the problem how many miles are on the truck? You most likely have carbon built up on the inside of the intake go to the dealer or qualified shop and have them do a B&G upper intake flush It is about 100 bucks and it will fix your problem If you have done all the other things like plugs and wires new fuel filter this will be the answer. Most ford techs would agree with this I have had two 4.0 explorers and had this done to both 135000 on the one im driving and 203000 on the last one

My husband finally got rid of his ford ranger. I am beginning to think those things are nothing but trouble.....his check engine light kept coming on, and then the tranny was going out...not to sure what it wrong with your but there was this website where you can ask questions on....can't remember the exact site, it was something like fordtruckenthusiats or something like that. Just try and check out like ford truck forums.
