Addiction is actually a disease that affects the brain chemistry in the addict differently that in the non addict. The neurons respond to the substance and metabolize it in a signifienctly different way that increases the production of endorphins which cause pleasure for the user. This chemical reaction does not take place in the non addicts brain so the craving does not happen to the extent and thus less of a chance of becoming chemically "addicted". You should understand that you can also become chemically dependant and this too can cause extremem difficulties.

I suspect that had you given in to your next-day cravings, you would be addicted as well. It sounds as simple as willpower. You recognize that you may become addicted, so you avoid doing the drugs too often. However that doesn't mean that you won't one day find it hard to get away from. How often is your recreational use? If it is every weekend, you are already addicted. Try going a weekend without it and you'll see.
I suggest quitting that junk alltogether. Use some softer, less addicting drugs, or have a drink to relax. Your current "clarity" WILL give way to an addiction, it's a matter of time. Help your friends quit that **** too, or you'll bound to get sucked into their world...
Good Luck...

Go to the library or online and look at what AA and NA say about addiction and you will find your answer. A person is addicted when there is a physical, spiritual and emotional imbalance.
What has me wondering is why you risk all you have to do illegal drugs. And why do you hang around with "addicts"?
One thing both AA and NA say is "it's not how much you use or how often, but what happens when you do". And people who are not addicted don't worry about it.
Good luck to you. Don't get arrested!

Hi Matt, who knows why you're not as dependent on it as your friends, but there are several really good reasons you should quit. The first that comes to my mind is for your own physical and emotional health. For obvious reasons. In case they aren't obvious, let me explain a little: in a few months, if they haven't already, you're friends will look pale, pasty, and emaciated. In a few months more, they're eyes will have black rings around them and be inset into their skulls. The cartilage in the back of their nose will dissolve and mucus will constantly run down the back of their throat. They will get frequent nose bleeds. Their teeth will rot and they will develop blisters all over their bodies which they will of course scratch and cause to bleed, probably eventually causing permanent pock marks. Believe me, junkies aren't pretty, and they are most definetely not happy.
I'll give you the drug speech my father gave me, he's a very wise man (a wiseguy sometimes too): ''anyone who tells you drugs aren't fun is stupid. Its when they start to take over your life that they're a problem, and eventually, they'll take over your life.''
You don't need drugs. You even just said so yourself. So why test your limits? One sad thing about the drug culture in the US is the way we treat people who are dependent on drugs. Drug addicts aren't seen as victims, but as people who chose their way of life, just look at our prison system. If you ever get caught, you're life will never be the same again. Every time you look for a job or apply to a school you'll have to check that box that says 'have you ever been caught in posession of illegal drugs'.
Good luck, whatever you do.

well, not everybody is into the same thing.
i did coke off and on for a month, and all it made me want to do is dress nice *shrugs*
but i did notice that if anybody in the room had some, my head exploded with NEED. it didn't agree with me.
that and since i was raised on ritalin, the coke high lasted a couple minutes at the most-it was metabolized in seconds.
on the flipside i was actually addicted to weed for 10 years though, so again, different people, different things.

A lot of people do drugs to escape some sort of problem they are dealing with, or problems that haven't been dealt with. It may be now, or it may have been a problem from the past. Those people are the drug addicts.
