BWAHAHAHA - Jay you are a tard that has obviously NOT ever played hockey!!! Fluke goals??? Its called...skill...something that may lack in your favorite sport.
And yes...to answer your Question, hockey in the states has major competitors such as the NFL, MLB and NBA.
If you were to go to Canada, you would find that every game of every team is sold out.
If you ask any NHL player (Canadian or not) they will tell you that Canada is the best and worst place to play.
Best b/c because it is the best supported by tenacious fans there, but the worst b/c they are so captivated by it that they scrutinize every mistake a player makes.
The only two reason that there are so many teams in the NHL that are based in the USA is b/c they try to market it to a stronger dollar and a more populous audience.
Can I get an amen?

I live near Philly and love ice hockey. Trouble is I'm 46 and have difficulty doing everyday things that I used to take for granted.
It has been my observation that hockey is a regional sport. The south is made up of folks who were born in the warmer climate and those who are from the north but don't like the cold. There are others who are located there due to their professions and other things that may be out of their control.
What ever the case may be, the fact is that the NHL is trying to grow by placing teams in cities that aren't big on hockey. The problem is that the lack of attendance is impacting the investment of money and time. The league will contract some day. They should work to enhance the built in popularity of the sport where teams do not exist but hockey fans are plenty.
Quebec City, Regina/Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Hamilton.
Seattle, Milwaukee, Portland (Maine).

I've been a gigantic fan of hockey most of my life. And I gotta tell you that I absolutely hate Hockey in the south. I doesn't belong there. As soon as their teams start losing they don't go to games. Carolina are the Stanley Cup champs? Gimme a break you'd never know it by this years attendance. Look for NHL Commish Gary Bettman to make sure that another silly a** southern team wins the cup this year. This guys ruined the game!

I moved from Pitt to PHX. People care very much about hockey in AZ. Part of that reason is so many people are from the north. Ever since the Coyotes moved here hockey has become very popular. They are building ice arenas all over town. Lots of people are playing in adult leagues and many kids are starting young. We had a guy drafted from AZ a couple of years ago and you will see more in the future.
Even Gretzky moved here.
Hockey is alive and well in the desert.

Oh yeah, TB and Dallas have all those empty seats as opposed to the ones in Chicago, Boston and New Jersey.
I care about hockey but the NHL is crap. I much perfer going to watch junior here in Vancouver.
Let me flip this question around, do you care about college football? Same diff. Expecting people in the Deep South to care about a cold winter sport is stupid. But then again the NHL is a stupid league.

I think the NHL needs to rid of a lot of teams. And of all the teams, coincidentally, are all in the US. For instance... New Jersey Devils, averaging 12000 per game - there are 2 other teams close by! The NHL tried to capitalize too much on the game and is ruining it. The talent is now spread too thin, forcing teams to spend big bucks on one player to help the team through. Also the refs suck this year which is creating teams to lose games and their fans.

nope...not a big hockey fan, sorry! If I were to rate manly sports it would be like this:
1. Football
2. Basketball
3. Baseball
then, Hockey...but that's just my opinion.
