You need a program that can play it. But just use one, do not download a bunch of them. If you have a program that is trying to play it, update that program.

Easiest thing is use the latest free WINDOWS MEDIA file:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/download/download.aspx

or any free avi player:

QuickTime

Most avi files wont play in windows unless you download a codec to make it work. Open media player, click the "guide" tab and then click download, search for codecs for media player, the are provided by Microsoft and are free, and just download one. If that still doesnt work, download a "DivX" player and that WILL play any time of movie, regardless of the format it is in.

avi files can be encoded using different codecs.

The most probable are xvid and divx

you just need to install these codecs and chances are that your video will play (under any player).

There is also a player that includes its own version of codecs called VLC. Try this if installing the above codecs wont work!

good luck!

Update your Real Player, or go to settings in Windows Media Player. Somewhere there is an option for WMP to use .avi files.

Check whether it is a AVI File or not, Check file Extention, Most of the time it won't be a AVI file when you download from sites. If not, Rename file putting ".avi"("file name".avi) end of the file name. Try best of luck !

Try varying the media playing software you use. Some software is more adaptable and works better with different file types than others.

avi files need to be converted, using something like Pinnacle's Studio 9 or Ulead.

1: do a fullcheck on the torrent to ensure no checksum errors 2: never trust any of the comments on whatever torrent site you got the link from 3: update ALL of your codecs even if you already got them and not just the K-Lite ones 4: bite the bullet and get another version - or better yet avoid torrents and join a release list

Here is your best answer :P

Download VLC player from here:
http://filehippo.com/download_vlc/
If this player will not play the file - then most likely nothing will, and your file is ... not usable.

Also, if you want to stick to WM - try downloading K-Lite codec pack: http://filehippo.com/download_klite_codec_pack/
It has different encodings to help you play stuff like that ;)

Good luck.
