In Hindu belief where the term originated, it is the idea that the good and evil a person does will return either in this life or in a later one. Karma is just the consequences of old choices - old beliefs and old attitudes - which unconsciously create and re-create similar consequences, until we become conscious of them and choose to change them. In the ancient Sanskrit language "karma" meant "action". Karma is not a punishment but an opportunity to correct old mistakes and make our lives (and ourselves) better.

Karma is actually an action verb, and is the "balancing" of things, as that is the law of the universe.Our concept of "balance" may slightly differ relative to the universe's concept, but in Essenes, Karma is the evening out of all things when the proper time comes.

Every action we make sets off a series of actions, and the universal flow dictates that this chain of events is unending until an action of opposite flow can balance out the original action.
