Try going to www.ballroomdancers.com and find a private studio near you. Don't go to chains like Arthur Murray or Fred Astire. They'll give you trial lessons, then make you buy a block of lessons but then they have no huge interest in teaching you because they already got the money from you. Good private studio will not make you pay for more than one private lesson at a time. They will not give you any trial lessons. Your first lesson IS your trial lesson. Your next lesson IS your trial lesson. If the lessons are good you will come back for more. Good instructors usually have enough students and they don't waste their time on free trial lessons.
Group lessons are OK to buy in a block of 10 or 12 - they don't cost as much anyway.

There are several studios around Nothern New Jersey. However, some places are only intersted in taking your money and not really showing you the best fundamentals. Check out FredAstaire.com. They have a huge network of franchised dance studios. Also try ArthurMurray.com A good studio will offer you trial lesson(s.)That way you can see if you'll even like their style of teaching. There's a great studio in Upper Montclair (www.danceastaire.com) They have an introductory promo... $75 for 2 private and 2 group lessons. The most important thing to remember is you won't "dance like the stars" in a couple of weeks. It takes lots of practice and hard work so make sure your first goal is to have fun! Whereever you go, make sure the atmosphere is fun and friendly. Some places take themselves and dance (for us beginners) WAY too seriously. GOOD LUCK!

I side with the franchise studios. If you're very unsure of whether you want to do this, the trial lessons are a good place to start. If you're completely sure, the blocks are designed specifically for your individual goals. You may get an instructor who's also new, but there are standards imposed by the corporation. An independent studio may be perfect, or it may be a wannabe that really shouldn't be in business, and it's difficult for a beginner to tell the difference.
