How many people pay to watch, a spelling bee, speech debate, or band concert. Parents, family and maybe some friends if there is not a sporting event.
Sports are entertaining and the vast majoirty of the world loves to watch sports. I still don't know why ESPN shows the spelling bee, it must be part of there Nerd Outreach Program.

I was a jock who dated a cheerleader...And the reason is at that age being a good athlete everyone not only knows you but also lets you get away with things the average student would not...So not knowing any better you take complete advantage.. That just the way highschool is..Unfortunetly looking back there are alot of things I would like to take back..But overall it was definitely alot of fun..

Jocks and cheerleaders think they run their school because people give them that feeling, from the administration, to the teachers to other students to the community.
I have always found the cheerleaders to be brain dead, self centered and stuck up.
The jocks to be just about the same (I was one of them at one time)!
After high school everyone pretty much equal out to the same level.
This has only been my experience.....

because athletics is the major source of revenue for a school district. plus, they are constantly on a public platform. academics have competitions and all, but again it doesn't produce the revenue that athletics does, nor does it interest the the majority of the public, like sports does. you do you think gets the better treatment Lebron James or some economics grad from Harvard? Tom Brady or some biologist from UConn? get my drift???
as far as cheerleaders... well, they are hot. beth, the AG champ, or debra, the spelling bee champ... not so much.

Because they are treated like gods by their coaches and most faculty. There is some belief that just because you have some talent in a sport or cheer leading that you are superior to the student that does exceptionally well in academics. Quit treating them like gods and then they will not run the school.
