I'd like to get my brother in law's new girlfriend a little something for Christmas, but I don't know her that well, and don't want to spend too much. She's about 36 years old. Any suggestions?

A box of chocolates, a warm muffler, gloves, slippers, mittens, some nice leg warmers, does she have any hobbies or special things she likes. Perhaps make some lotion or melt and pour soup.
A beautiful scented candle is always welcome
Accessories: scarf, bracelet, chunky necklace (depending on her style), earrings with Seasonal charm

Get her something like a nice lotion, candles or a new scarf.
I think if you get her a gift certificate, you'd probably feel more compelled to spend more to not look like a cheapskate. You can probably find something nice for that much money... and avoid the gift cert all together.

Candles are always a safe bet for women. Get something in a neutral scent, like vanilla. She'll be touched that you thought of her.

You can get gift certificates for a mall instead of just one particular store (at least I know you can in my area). That would at least let her know that you are thinking of her and she can get something that she would like since you don't know her tastes.
