ive installed windows xp lots of times! but i always had a fresh copy of windows 98! now i dont have a source of upgrading from 98. and im screwed! arent i? is there a way to install, rather than upgrad windows xp on a newly formatted harddrive. maybe some kind of extra MSdos files i could use to some how support the program?

The answer is yes and its the preferred way.
Windows XP disks (all releases) supports "boot to cd" which loads a standard embedded installer engine.
You can even use an upgrade disk to perform a clean install.
At a point in the installation the machine will inform you that a previous version of windows was not found and to enter the path, simply insert your Windows 98 disk and allow the system to verify. When its finished remove and re-insert the windows XP disk for the install to continue.

pop the disc in and follow the prompts although at some time you may need the 98 disc also

Set bios to boot from CDROM, pop the cd in and go from there. Boot files are on the disk

try bootable CD that's it.
