Humans did not evolve from modern apes. Modern apes and humans both evolved from a common ancestor.

This is a common question from the creationists and it makes no sense at all. Modern day apes descended from their early ancestors traced back to a hominid species dating over 2.7 to 4 m.y.a.
Modern man belongs to the genus Homo, which is a subgroup in the family of hominids. What evolved into Homo was likely the genus Australopithecus (once called "man-ape"), which includes the famed 3.2 million-year-old "Lucy" fossil found three decades ago.
The whole human family tree, being able to connect the branches is the life work of anthropoligists and other scientists. The great apes are man's closest cousins, they developed off the main family of hominids over 4 m.y.a.
To say that modern man descended from present day monkeys and apes is as ludicrous as saying "horses descended from zebras, so why are the zebras still around...?"

*sigh* Do you sincerely want to know, or are you just another creationist propagandist deliberately spreading misinformation? If not then I apologize, because 99% of creationists who aren't of the scientifically-ignorant type, ARE deliberately-lying propagandists.
To answer your question, it's because humans did NOT evolve from any ape or monkey species alive today. Rather, apes & humans had a common ancestor in the distant past (hominids) which branched off to become the separate species.
Some of these primitive hominids are still around today. They're called creationists.

~If god created man and is such a perfect and all-powerful, all-knowing dude, why did he do such a lousy job of it and why doens't he bother to fix the mess he's made? By the way, evolution or mutation of a new species doesn't require the extinction of the parent organism. If you want to criticize a theory, at least learn about it first.
