I don't think being a copycat is a good thing, but that doesn't make copycat a bad word.
Just something bad to be.

The term copycat (also written as copy-cat or copy cat or cc) refers to the tendency of humans to duplicate the behavior of others, as expressed in the saying, "monkey see, monkey do."
This notably happens in the case of "copycat crimes" where a notorious or unusual crime inspires a wave of similar activity; this can happen with crimes ranging from shoplifting of particular items and graffiti, up to copycat suicides and murders. The term is used both for the act and for the person. It is often used in the derogatory sense, meaning a plagiarist. The "copycat effect" refers to the tendency of sensational publicity about a violent murder or suicide to cause more of the same.

Yes, if you're calling someone that and you're putting them down. Although it's been said that "imitation is the finest form of flattery", I find teens and kids have a hard time accepting that. They don't consider it flattering but that attention is taken away from themselves, that's not fun. Adults or mature persons are more gracious about others copying them.
I'm mainly talking about style, not homework!

Of course not... It might be misconstrued by the person that you are accusing of being a copycat and they just might be peeved by being called a copycat when they wanted to give the impression that they were the original designers/etc of something
