Well, there are two kinds.
One is for orienteering. It has a needle that points north.
The other is for drawing circles. It is like an inverted "V". One end has a point that is the center of the circle and the other end has a pencil attached to draw the circle.

A compass is used to help you find magnetic North. Once you find that, the other points on the compass can help you determine which way you need to head in order to reach your preferred location.
Compasses are a nifty wee tool that can help you draw the perfect circle - lovely! Watch out for the sharp bit though, it's nasty.

Depends - are we talking geography or maths?!
As you've asked this in the Chemistry section, I can't really tell, but I'm gonna assume maths.
A pair of compasses can be used to draw circles (or imcomplete ones, called 'arcs') to a perfect degree of perfection!! They are designed in such a way that you can swivel a pencil (one end of the compass) around a central point (marked by the other end of the compass, a sharp metal point), drawing a perfect arc as it goes.

Ya mean compasses, not compaases, isn't it? It "looks" toward the North, so we can know directions.
