We aren't celebrating the killing of Native Americans!! This is a day that we set aside to give "thanks" based loosely on what happened at the "first" Thanksgiving. It is not actually about celebrating what happened 400 years ago, but its about remembering to give "thanks" for what you have now. And as an American Indian, I think its just a tad bit racist to want to give to Native American charities just on Thanksgiving, which By the way, I never knew we had our own socio-economic problems, must be something knew...God, I love some of you white people with your guilt. I'm just playing, you're hearts in the right place

The exact same reason Atheists celebrate the commercialized and materialistic Christmas. It's a national holiday. I celebrate it even though I have ancestors from France who came here before the Mayflower.

Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou.

I totally agree. As a white person, I'm totally disgusted with the way our ancestors came and slaughtered the Native Americans and stuck the rest on reservations.

We should get rid of this holiday. The money we spend on Thanksgiving food should be donated to schools on reservations and any other Native American cause.

** Well, obviously I got my facts wrong. All of you are correct about the Pilgrims. As for the guilt...well, yeah..maybe there is some...but all the answers following mine were sincere and humorous...needed the laugh. Thanks fellow humans.

You guys need to read your history books again. The Pilgrims were a deep religious sect and the tradition is that they gave thanks for what they had by celebrating with the native americans that did assist them. Unfortunatly, them and the English settlers were also constantly under attack by the indians who felt pressured by the settlers moving in. The indians are just as guilty on not keeping to their part of the treaties that were signed as the English settlers. Obvously, there was a major culture clash and it turned into a tradegy....

Whoa. The holiday was created by people who "bit the hand that feed them", but the true meaning is gratitude for everything that you have.

Thanksgiving as we know it is VERY loosely based on one feast several hundred years ago. It is a time to give thanks for what we have. Nobody is celebrating a massacre. I don't understand where some people get this stuff.
