What is wrong with them. They let Alfonso Soriano go. He said in the paper he wanted to stay in Washington. They did try to keep him. 40 40 man.

They could have tried harder. Soriano was their big man and big draw. Shame.

They're a small market team that won't invest in the free agent market, and will likely never be a contender.

They will remain a small market team for two reasons:

1. Their fans do not support their team in the same way that large market team fans do. More ticket and merchandise sales = more revenue to spend in the free agent market.

2. They are too close to Baltimore to ever break out of the status of "small market". This is why the Orioles didn't want a team in DC, and why two teams in DC have already failed and left the city. There simply aren't enough people to support the Nationals, and certainly not enough Orioles fans in the area who will suddenly drop a lifetime of being an Orioles fan to jump on the Nationals bandwagon.

Of course, lightning has been known to strike for small market teams, but it is very few and far between...and being in the NL East certainly doesn't help matters.

A baseball team is like any other business...the more money they make, the more money they can spend, and right now, they're not making enough money to sign Soriano to an 8 year contract worth over $100 million dollars, so he went to a team whos fans are willing to support them to where they can afford such a player.

It sucks, but that's the way it is, and with the players union, it's never going to change.

The team couldn't afford him, that was why he left. He just signed a 100+ million contract with the Cubbies. That's a lot of dough even for a large market team like the Cubs. The Nats just don't draw as much.

They are a small market team and dont have the cash to pay him. All big name free agents say that they want to stay with there team at first and then when the money isnt there they goto the big market team. Just do yourself a favor and come to the dark side.... Be a Yankee fan.
