a list is just a series of names, numbers, objects, whatever. Your shopping list is a list.
an A-List is a list of important people, usually those to be invited to an event.

If there is an A-List for an event, there is usually also a B-List, also of people, though of lesser importance. If a person on the A-List declines the invitation, then you can invite someone from the B-List instead to make up the correct number of persons you want to have at your event.

A list means an inventory. There is no English word “alist”
