there is no differance, but a almost always comes before a consanent, and an before a vowel, so a list is correct.

A comes before singular words starting with a consonant, while an comes before singular words starting with a vowel. As the word list starts with a consonant, a is prefixed. It is wrong grammar to say an list. However, there exists a word - enlist. It is a verb and to enlist means to include in a list or a group. So neither a nor an is prefixed to enlist.

Look its not actually words beginning with a,e,i,o,u which are preceeded by an. Its like this...phonetically, if a word has vowel sound in its beginning then it should be preceeded by an and not a.
So an M.P (member of parliament) is correct bcoz M.P phonetically starts with E vowel.
(like 'EM-pea')
And in the above mentioned "hour", h is not spelt so it starts with "uh" which can be considered vowel "u", as "u" in under.
The 'list' dosent start with a vowel sound. Thats why an list is not correct.

I am fully agree with the user "Lord of Lust". He not explained the correct use of vowels but also made an additional hit by not ignoring the use of Phonetics "The study of Sounds".
