Currently our 1 month old baby doesn't have an established routine. Generally he has a bottle about 9pm-11pm, will go to sleep about an hour later then wake up roughly 5-6 hours later. During the day he sleep is all over the place. My partner wants to give him his last bottle at 11pm, then wake him up every four hours for a feed. I disagree because waking a baby regularly at night is making a rod for your own back (his weight is already established and the health visitor has told us its ok for him to sleep longer) and you can't make a baby eat if he doesn't want to. The question is, how do we do it so its flexible at night so he can sleep for 5-6 hours, then have a set waking up time (8am-ish), and then a definate 11pm bedtime? Since if he sleeps for 5 hours one night and 6 the next, this will knock the 11pm bedtime on the head.

I agree with you on the fact that you shouldn't wake the baby up every 4 hrs to feed. I know this sounds harsh, but have you tried to let the baby cry it out for the early morning feeding?? That will put him in a routine quick. Both of my kids were sleeping through the night at 1 mth. I would put them down at 7:30 and they wouldn't wake up until 7:30 the next morning! Good luck to you

Well the goal is to establish a night and day schedule with the child. Wake them up every so many hours during the day. When you are ready for the child to go to bed make a night routine, bath, bottle, rocking chair then make that the last feeding and don't get up unless the child does. Make the midnight snacks dark and dull. Don't do a lot of moving around. Feed the child and put them back in the crib. And then at 8 wake the child up and get them ready for the day. My girls were sleeping thru the night by about 4mths.

First rule: NEVER wake up a sleeping baby during the night. For just the reasons you described. When they're born, they don't know the difference between day and night. So if they're sleeping at night, never wake them. During the day, after a few months he should begin taking fairly predictable naps. Otherwise, establish a bedtime routine that includes a warm bath, bottle, story, and lights out. Be consistent every night. But at one month, he'as a little young for you to expect him to sleep more than 5-6 hours at a time. It will take until 4-5 mos. before he sleeps a good chunk of the night. Good luck!

hi there, it's practically impossible to have a routine for a bub that young... (establishing routines like evening bath time and singing time and things like that is ok) you'll see that soon he'll go though some intense growth spirt during which his eating and sleeping habbits will change very much so and he'll go through a number of spirts like that during the first year...my little girl got into a bit of a routine at around seven months.. i tried a few times to have a set routine with her before that and ended up becoming very stressed, sleep deprived and depressed at times and ended up giving up since it didnt work..( though every child is different) if he needs a feed during the night, he'll let you know trust me :) otherwise he needs sleep just about as much as food so dont wake him... and dont get too caught up with exact sleep times and things like that cos like i've said they'll change a number of times and you'll only end up in frustration... give him a few more months to get settled. he will guide you..
my little girl is 18 months old now and she has the most spot on routine its just amazing...

With a one month old, you really need to follow HIS lead. Eventually he'll fall into a pattern. At least wait until after his 6 week growth spurt and see what happens.

Never wake a baby up to feed him/her! They will wake up on their own when they are ready to be fed!
