I know it's the human condition to be constantly searching for something - even when we have it, we soon tire of it and start looking for something else. What I don't understand is why we can't just be happy with what we've got.

exactly ...people always think theres some big life waiting for them somewhere over ther .... somewhere else .. and cant be content to concentrate on what they do have and make it better ... i think alot of it has to do with media and tv telling us we are missing out coz we arnt perfect ... we need to buy their products and move up to the "glam" life or we are nothing ... its horseshit ... turn the tv off and clean that pigsty u call a home and take ur spouse out to dinner .

We can try to be satisfied with what we have and of course that would give us a sort of happiness. However, because we are a living being, we can not remain static - dynamic change is the nature of life. As and when we are fully satisfied, we start feeling static and as though without a lively existence. Thus we set out in search of new goals which place new requirements and the state of happiness arising from a satiated mind ends there.

What we should therefore aim for is to get a dynamic state of happiness rather than a constant happiness. For that what we perhaps need to do is to know how small and minuscule we are in this great and diverse universe and accordingly learn to take successes as well as failures with more than a pinch of salt!!

Remember that the "constantly searching" factor is what gives life a boost to survive. Its what makes life interesting.

Imagine yourself in some sort of a house arrest. Your refregirator is half full. Your television shows just one show 365 days. You have to be where you are no matter what. Would you want to sit in your couch day in and day out? Afterall you may have everything you need right there. You can try for a few days but you will eventually feel like killing yourself.

There is a fine line between "searching" or "finding" vs being greedy. Searching or finding is ok....greed isnt.

We can definitely be content if we want to, with what we have. I know I am. No complaints.

Want a technical answer? I think there's a biological reason. If we were satisfied, we wouldn't make very good gene machines. We wouldn't be out reproducing and ensuring the survival and transmission of our genetic material. Desire and fear serve these biological purposes, but at the same time they make us restless and perpetually discontent. In other words, we evolved the way we did to meet biological imperatives, not to be happy.

Have you ever noticed that religions, and a number of secular philosophies, teach that happiness is found in going against our natural inclinations? Swimming upstream against desire and fear? I think that's the trick. We find happiness by disengaging with that part of us that is endlessly seeking. In my experience, contentment requires practice. Of course, this isn't what people want to hear, because anything that threatens to deny us pleasure is scary.

Expansion is the basic nature of Ego. Only those who are inclined to keep their mind open to such a possibility try to turn inwards, and seek their own unlimited nature from within, and attain fulfillment !

it is maybe because you are living a very complicated life. my opinion is: if everybody will just live a simple life being satisfied
for the needs that are just enough then i think we will be settled and be happy.
