It's all that open space. It's like the old west in the US. When people have room to spread out, they don't get so hostile and pushy and all that. Put one rat in a pail, and you can make a pet of him. Put ten rats in a pail, and they will destroy one another due to the crowding. Not that humans are rats, but . . . well, they can look an awful lot like it in the crowded canyons of a big city.

People who have neighbors close enough to look in the window live a much more closed, hostile life than those whose nearest neighbor is not even visible.

What are you talking about??? Here Australians are best known for being a thieves. I know it could be just a joke, but it is amazing how many Australians keep this joke ALIVE.
