I am buying a condo and would like ideas on how to change over the fireplace to something more efficient and engery friendly...any ideas or suggestions would be helpful.

Simply close the flu. They make some really good ventless gas logs now, that look and feel like the real thing. They're about 98% efficient, and they produce no problems in the dwelling.

Is it a traditional wood fireplace now? You can put in a gas fireplace log, if you have natural gas or propane heat. Ask the gas company that you'll use to see if they have a list of qualified contractors.

Leave it as is and, put in an insert with blowers, it'll save you a large percent of the heat. Or change it over to an electric and it'll cost you to use it. Good for looks. If you go to gas it's another whole ball game with chimney inserts etc.
