I am not sure about the legalities of it, but as many others have said- it is rude, and it violates privacy. I am not sure if you are the one checking boyfriends voice mail, but you need to ask yourself why? If there is a trust issue why are you still with him?
IF it is against the law, there are probably alot of people who are in some big trouble!! I have a friend who does this with her husband- so rude!!!

Unless he is a total bonehead. He knows you are checking his voicemail. Once you listen to new messages they are then classified as old messages on voicemail. If you don't trust him enough that you are checking his voicemail. You better find another. I would already be looking for a replacement for you if I was him.

Not necessarily illegal but rather improper and impolite to do such a thing which when done will contribute to displeasure!

if it is not...it should be....
how would the GIRLFRIEND feel if the boyfriend went through her purse?....violated??..YOU BET....my wife of 29 years gets upset if I look in her purse for keys...it's a private thing.....don't look in his wallet,,,don't open his mail. If it doesn't belong to you, LEAVE IT ALONE. the Privacy Act in Canada fixes the email question...DON"T DO IT.
Opening a boyfriend's email is the same as breaking into someone's house and looking through their bedroom for private items.
Would you go into your neighbour's mailbox outside their house and open their mail?
I think not

Depending on the state you are in it may be considered an invasion of privacy, or wiretapping. I can assure you it does create civil liabilities

No. Unless somehow you are tapping his phone lines, then that requires a court order. But, if your at his house and just listen to it or pick up his cell phone and listen to it.. No laws against that.
Ethical? No.... Illegal .... No.
