im always mistaken by the first name of thompson(if there is any) and j.j. thomson.

J.J. Thompson was named John Joseph Thompson. He did experiments exploring the properties of the electron and his investigation led to the invention of the cathode ray tube, which was later instrumental in launching the electronics revolution which still continues. He received the Nobel prize in 1906 for this work.
