I vaguely seem to remember reading that a pet bear had been adopted by an artillery regiment and was trained to help load shells for the artillery pieces. Is this true or first a figment of my imagination?

The Polish Army used bears to carry ammunition. The bear's name was Wojtek. It was World War II, however.

It sounds like your imagination. The Sikorski Institute in London has a statue of a bear which was the mascot of a Polish regiment, and the bear may have done some hauling but not loading shells, l think. The animals at war exhibit at the Imperial War Museum mentions this same bear but no others.

A good question and sorry i do not have the answer for you, but being that animals are being used for many testing and training purposes now. It would not be a surprise to hear of it as being so. It would seem the reason for turning to the animal is because they do not speak our language and they can not tell on anyone in particular, As humans go the trainer can not be trained except , here i go rattling on, I'm so very sorry, i got caught up in thought . I hope you find your lost answer.

Not sure about the bears, although I heard dogs were used by the Germans. They had explosives strapped to them and were trained to run under stationary enemy vehicles
