It has to do with negative and positive ions. Before an approaching thunderstorm the atmosphere is positively charged. These positive ions can cause such things as headaches, body aches and a general ill feeling.
Thunderstorms, lightning or static electricity to be exact, are full of negative ions which rid the atmosphere of the positive ions. They also clean the air of positively charged particles. Air cleaners work the same way. They put out negative ions that attach themselves to positively charged, dust, pollen and other particles, removing them from the air making it fresher and cleaner.
That is why we feel better after a nice thunderstorm because the air is fresher, cleaner and has less allergens and pollutants.
I love thunderstorms. Nature's air cleaners.
