Both of them are totally eclipsed by Steve Hackett (with Genesis 1970 - 1977 and solo ever since).
His skill on all forms of guitar and his inovation in guitar (he invented both the "violining" technique - using a volume pedal and right-hand tapping) makes him the greatest in my opinion.
I've seen him live twice and never fail to be amazed by him. His new album Wild Orchids shows his abilities as good as they were in the seventies. I think Eric Clapton lost his edge a long time ago.

I'd go with Mick Ronson who added his defining guitar sound to David Bowie's early albums, including the legendary 'Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars'.
Ronson was also skilled in production (coproducing for example Lou Reed's transformer with Bowie, and producing The Smith's 'For Your Arsenal') and also provided great string arrangements.
Sadly Mick was taken from us in 1993, but his legend lives on...

Technically probably Brian May , but he gets minus points for having such girly hair and he always seems to be a bit wet.
Gary Moore, excellent espicially for the blues stuff.
But im going for Jimmy Page , so ner ner ner ner ner
