I recently saw a documentary debating this. Their consensus was that he died from an accidental overdose of medication. His lover had recently died in combat, and he was in a state of great depression, which may have also weakened him. Then, about a month later, he fell ill after a meal. Because of his weakened state, he may have been more susceptibe to food poisoning. One of the treatments for food poisoning at the time was the use of a plant found in Macedonia. Unfortunately, it is also poisonous. He suffered for 12 days, and the researchers determined that his symptoms exactly matched those of the poison. They believe that like any other impatient young man, he wanted to hurry up and get going, so he may have taken too high a dose, thinking that if he did, he could get well faster, and accidentally poisoned himself.
