In the bottom there is a pilot it might be out you need to light it with a match. Sometimes the top will go out and you'll need to do the same thing there.

I have owned both electric and gas cook stoves. I will pick the gas stove over a electric stove any day. Both of them had a boiler in the bottom. With gas you can regulate the heat that you want in an instanced. If your power goes out you can still cook and in a pinch, if you source of heat is electric, you can heat your house (at least a room) with you gas cook stove. I have had better luck baking in a gas oven than in an electric one. I have had the heating elements burn out on the electric stoves as well. I have been shocked by an electric stove a few times when something went wrong.

Either your oven control or the safety control for the oven ( a separate control for safety that keeps the gas from coming) is out. You'll have to have this replaced, it's not cheap in some models. The former guy your talking about sounds like he lite it manually. I wouldn't suggest this but, it works if your careful. You can use a match if the safety valve isn't burned out. Otherwise it won't lite whatever you do, only if the control valve is out. Good luck and be careful, I didn't suggest this.
My daughter lost some hair doing this.

There is a separate pilot light for the oven.
Make sure the oven is OFF!
Light it; but be very careful.
It's usually located under the broiler.
Be blessed!

You may have to clean around the pilot flame hole, and sometimes adjust the height of the flame, there is a small screw nearby the pilot light for this.
