It depends on your situation. If you travel alot and want your computer with you, go laptop. But if you don't need your computer with you when you travel, go desktop. A desktop computer will be more powerful and more easily upgradable, but a laptop is much more portable.

You need to ask yourself some questions (assuming it is for you):
What do you need a computer for?
Is this for personal or professional use?
What operating system are you comfortable using?
What software do you have already or need to buy?
How much are you willing to spend.
Only they can you narrow the field to a manufacturer or operating system.
If you need to install extra hard drives, high end video/audio cards, etc., get a desktop.
If you prefer a compact form factor, get a notebook.
I'm very happy with notebook computers.
My two year old Toshiba Satellite running Windows XP was a piece of garbage right out of the box. So I don't recommend that.
HP business grade notebooks aren't bad.
I switched to Apple a year ago after more than a decade of using Windows and I am very happy. I've used the iBook and now the MacBook running Mac OS X.
Good luck!
P.S. Laptops are now marketed as "notebooks" because they run so hot now that users often find them uncomfortable to keep on a lap for very long. :)

If you're only going to get one, choose the PC. It's not portable but laptops just seem to wear out so easily. Mine only lasted about a year and a half before the power supply went on the fritz. The keyboard didn't last three months. Everyone I know with a laptop is forever griping about it.
PC: easy to crack open and customize and won't burn your lap and crotch to cinders.

PC, as they can be easily upgraded and modified to your liking. Once you have a laptop, you're stuck with it. Very few parts of it can be upgraded when they go out of date.
