If a woman was in an accident, would someone else at the hospital do it for them? This is a serious question, my friends and I are curious.

If female patients have to undergo surgery at the time they are having their period they are automatically assessed pre-op and if they have their period then they are advised to use a towel that way nursing staff are aware and can deal with the patients hygiene needs as routine. If its an emergency the tampon would be removed in A and E and replaced with a towel as and when needed,as an Auxiliary Nurse for 20years and now a Student Nurse I have come across this problem a few times the patient is embarrassed bu we as nursing staff try to put the patient at ease and deal with the patients needs, hope this answers your question.

As a former nurse I have had to do this a couple of times, but only if the accident or illness is serious enough for it to be necessary, IE. if a patient is unconscious, but there are strict rules surrounding this as it can be interpreted as a type of assault so guidelines have to be adhered to!

I think they do. My friend is a casualty nurse and I'm sure she's talked about this with me before.

That would be pretty embarrassing wouldn't it?!
