The top E & B strings are tuned to the same pitch. The G,D,A & E strings are an octave apart. For standard, light guage strings the guage (in inches) should be E-1st & E-2nd = .012; B-3rd & B 4th = .016; G 5th =.025; G 6th = .010; D 7th = .032; D 8th = .014; A 9th = .042; A 10th = .020; E 11th = .054 & E 12th = .030.

Twelve string guitars have the normal 6 strings, followed by 4 thinner strings for E, A, D, and G -- the B and E strings are the same. The thickness for the E, A, D, and G strings are all different. Each string has a different thickness, except the two B's have the same thickness, as well as the two high E's.
