clean the filter

I find this happens when the filters need washing. Look in the bottom of the machine. You will probably see a funny looking grille with a hole in it. This, and any other filters underneath it, needs to be removed and washed by hand in the sink. Look in the instruction book for instructions on how to remove and wash it but mostly they just sort of unscrew and lift out.

To lengthen the time between cleans make sure you always remove large bits of food waste before putting the dishes in the machine.

Occasionally when I don't stack plastic items properly they flip up during the cycle and don't drain properly and can be dirty and gritty as a result. If the dishes that are coming out like this are the right way up then make sure you turn them over next time! If I have a lot of plastic items I make sure that I put a metal or china item so that the plastic things can't get knocked over by the force of the water jets.

I don't understand why people would say to rinse your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher, if that was the case why have a dishwasher... Sounds to me like your not getting enough water supplied to the dishwasher...A simple way to find out is to let the dishwasher fill... After filling open the door and see where the water level is... It should be no less than a 1/4'' below the heating element at the bottom of the dishwasher... If you have plenty of water, check to make sure that the filter screens around the pump are clean...If they are clean, check to make sure that the holes in the upper and lower wash arms are clear of debris... Also check to see how hot the water is coming into the dishwasher... Alot of times you need to purge the water to the dishwasher to get instant hot water...Do this by letting the kitchen sink run until the water is hot... If you don't fill the dishwasher with hot water, than it won't be able to break down the detergent you put into it...If these all check out good, than you might have something wrong internally in the pump, like a broken chopper blade...

You may have hard water and need to put in a water softener if you see a white film over your dishes.

You may also be putting in too much soap, leaving a soapy residue.

Your dishes may not be drying fast enough. In that case, use Jet-Dry.

The jets may be clogged up. If so, put some Tang orange drink powder in where you would put the powdered soap and the Tang will help open the clogs.

If food is still left on them. Soak your dishes in water in the sink for a while before sticking them in the diswasher. This will soften whatever is on the dishes so it comes off easier.

Check the filter to make sure it is clean.

Sure you have checked the filters etc. Maybe the levels are wrong. These are controlled by small pressure switches on water galleries. If these get blocked, the dishwasher will not fill/empty properly. No gaurantees, but get a bowl, get a bag of washing soda(55pence UK) empty the bag in the bowl, put bowl in the machine, do a hot wash. This may clear the galleies, restore your water levels.

There should be a filter somewhere in the washer or in a part of the washer's plumbing. You should find that and clean it. Also, make sure that you are not using too much detergent. Finally, if that doesn't help, you may just have to rinse your dishes before loading them in the dishwasher.

Maybe a clogged filter. Gritty sounds to me like the detergent powder is not disolving during the cleaning process.
Use fresh, good quality powder like Cascade. Use less of it to see if it makes a difference.
Make sure the heating/drying element is working properly. Water has to be very hot on the wash cycle.

we had a problem with our dishwasher where things weren't coming out clean - check the filter isn't blocked, then check that the dishes are actually being washed with hot water (the dishwasher should feel hot whilst in use), - this was what was the problem with our dishwasher - if its neither of these problems I would phone the company that made your dishwasher as it may need a repairman to come out to fix it.

Do you have hard water in your town? Are you using enough Cascade? Are you using Jet Dry? Have you checked to make sure your dishwashed is draining properly? Maybe have someone look at it to see if it needs maintenance.

Every tried scrubbing and rinsing your plates before inserting them into the dishwasher? Or better yet, ever tried washing dishes with your own two hands. Ask not what a machine can do for you, but ask what you can do for yourself.

The filter may need cleaning. I always give them a rince under the tap before I put them in and it helps a lot.
