There are 2 types of tomato. Determinate and indeterminate. Indeterminate Tomatoes grow like a "vine" it is not the choking type vine that you normally think of that you see up in trees, but it is a vine.it's more of a sprawling on the ground type vine. they will grow and bloom till frost kills them and you will have tomatoes of all stages on the plant. An indeterminate tomato vine can grow up to 25 feet in one summer.. Determinate tomatoes grow to a certain height(usually 2 to 4 feet), like a bush and then bloom all at once so that the fruit all matures at the same time(better for canning or preserving) , then the plant dies back.
