pksk is wrong - the success rate is not 40-50%. It's more like 10-13%, depending on the issues. I also thought it was 50% when I got mine done, only to be told later that no, no it wasn't.
IUI is "intrauterine insemination". It's done in a doctor's office. The male spouse provides a semen sample an hour before the procedure. The nurses "wash" it, getting all the dead and deformed sperm out so that only the good are left. They then insert those sperm directly into the tubes where they need to be, and then it's up to the egg to cooperate.
This procedure is done when either 1) the male has a sperm issue (low count, low motility, low morphology) or 2) there is a problem with the female that does not include the tubes (hostile cervical mucus, for example).
"Is it useful?" you asked. In what manner? For getting pregnant, yes...it can be. It can also be expensive so you only want to get it done once you've exhausted all the other options and have no choice.

IUI-Intrauterine Insemination.
A sperm sample is given and then is "washed" to remove dead sperm and seminal fluid (what is left is clear and not milky white)
Washing can also sometimes stimulate slower swimming sperm.
After about 2 hours the nurse/doctor uses a flexible catheter type syringe (its plastic) into the womans cervix. Doing it this way deposits the sperm closer to where they need to be and also provides more sperm than by normal intercourse. With an IUI you can have as many as 500,000 or more sperm in the area they need to be in for fertilization to hopefully occur rather than only a couple hundred or more that actually make it that far. Most sperm die or get lost before even reaching the uterus.

When you try to conceive naturally, the sperm is deposited in the vagina, and has to travel to the uterus, but in iui, the sperm is washed of the semen, and highly motile and healthy ones are concentrated in the lab and deposited in the uterus with a catheter thus increasing the chances of a +ve result, it is practically painless and some cramping later like before periods. I had mine done and have to wait b4 i can tell you whether it worked, the success rates i am told are upto 25% depending on age and reason for infertility, plz discuss with your doc...it is definitely worth a try with no major hassles or risks. All the best if you are ttc.

are you talking about artificial insemination?if you are than I believe that it is largely used when the mans sperm is the problem for infertility, basically if the motility is not good, than artificial insemination is a good option.
