A hobo is a term used for a homeless person who spends their time riding the trains around the U.S. When we Americans think of a hobo we think of the grundgy old man with a handkerchief of his only belongings tied to the end of a stick and being carried over his shoulder. If you would like to see a resemblance of a hobo, you can browse for "Boxcar Willie". He was a very famous country western singer from the 1930s on up.

Someone with no home. There used to be an Americn TV show about a dog called 'The Littlest Hobo'. He travelled round helping peeps wherever he went but never stayed for very long - just long enough to give assistance!! I loved that show!!

It's a tramp.
Hobos were a kind of American tramp who travelled illegally on trains during the great economic depression looking for work in different cities.

It's probably a short version for a longer word - but basically anyone who takes to the open road and lives by their wits. Not really a down and out - but someone who's deliberately opted out of the rat race - and who goes where fortune or fate leads them.
I guess most of us have toyed with the idea at some time or other. Unfortunately - most of us like our possesions too much to ever make that kind of break!

a guy or girl, that lives like a tramp but is a bit better than that.

The original definition was: A homeless tramp. In the US, I understand that a hobo is understood to be a member of a distinctive sub-culture (hobo ism) of homeless, travelling workers.

A homeless person who, even when they are offered a place to live, money, clothing & other necessities, turns it down because they don't want it due to being too drunk or not knowing if they could keep the upkeep of it. They seem to actually like living on the street & being unhygenic.
