The story I've read is that it used to be Perry McCarthy, but it was a secret. When he mentioned being the Stig in his autobiography, the BBC sacked him (remember them killing off the first Stig, and replacing him with a new one??).
Don't try to find out who the current Stig is - if you do find out they'll kill him too.

The current one is a touring car driver called Perry McCarthy although he is substituted in certain circumstances.
There have been shows involving stig driving a F1 car (the renault car which did the tracks fastest time for example) and he was changed to an approved driver from the F1 company.
There have also been the odd time when Perry simply wasn't available.

everyone thinks we was the german FEMALE driver that ragged that transit van round the nerburge ( sorry bout spelling!) It was at the end of Top gear about 2 seasons ago?!?!??!
