If they are still in active duty in the CIA, can they reveal their identities to their family? If not, then what are the consequences of the agents for doing so?

No, Dick Cheney got in serious trouble this year for leaking the name of a CIA agent. So basically the answer is; if the vice president can't get away with it than nobody else can.

Most operatives are active only for short terms. The FBI has a lot of agents the CIA hires out citizens with special credentials and has few agents. Like the CIA agent Cheney is accussed of outing... She did book keeping for 6 years was sent on one 3 week mission and then went back to book keeping. Her mission was a failure, she was supposed to get billing information on the French firm Alcatel but missed the meeting as she was too busy getting her nails done. Bad Bad Mister Chaney

If a CIA 'Informant' can't even reveal his/her identity, what makes you think an AGENT would?.

Not even their spouses are supposed to know it, they disguise themselves as journalists, salesmen, and only reveal their employment with the CIA when retired.

Agents must not divulge their identities while still active until retirement to avoid exposure.
