Music is such a subjective thing, so wrapped up in time and place, that your question is almost pointless. If you're the kind of person who has closed his ears to anything you haven't heard before, or dismisses anything made after they turned 30... and settled down... and stopped going to gigs, listening to the radio as much, stopped hanging out with the people who introduced you to stuff... To appreciate todays rock music, you'd have to have the same willingness to find it and the same passion for it you had when rock wasn't classic, but just rock. Difficult to do, I know but it can be done - John Peel is the perfect example of a man whose enthusiasm for new music never waned. Im trying to follow his example and in the hope that you haven't resigned yourself to the pipe and slippers just yet, may I recommend some really good modern rock?
If you loved Iron Maiden, check out Trivium. If you like things a bit proggier, try Oceansize. Opeth are tremendous too, if you can deal with a death-metal vocal style. A lot of the emo (which is just woe-is-me goth rock if you ask me) is a bit same-y but Funeral For A Friend have some good tunes. If you're after something a bit more familiar, Wolfmother and Jet know how to knock out a tune or two. Like Queen? Try Muse. And you gotta love The White Stripes and The Raconteurs. I'm not a big Strokes fan , but Lizard has a GREAT bassline and if you were into Joy Division or Echo & The Bunnymen, then Editors will really float your boat. The point being, the music is no better or worse than it was. It's you who has changed if you believe there's a difference. And may I just say before anyone shouts me down, that I've been a musician and music writer for 23 years and that I WORSHIP Led Zeppelin? And that (God forgive me) I was a Goth too. I'm really not playing devil's advocate here.

In my opinion, i prefer to say that classic rock is absolutely better than rock music today. Why ? here are the reason for what i say :
1. Many legends of rock music are from the classic rock band.
2. As you know that right now the technology for music equipment are so amazing. So many rock bands right now really being help by all of the high tech equipment, from the instrument that they use until the recording equipment. So it's so much easier to be a musician right now than long times ago. But if we saw to the classic bands, they really have to face all the limitation, it's so hard for them that time.

I think Classic Rock is better even though I like a lot of the newer stuff out there. Bands just don't have the longevity they used to have like Aerosmith, the Stones, even Bon Jovi. It seems you hear a few good songs from many bands but they seem to fall off the face of the earth once they've made their quick fortune. Not all of them are like that but it seems more so today. Also, many songs are remakes and a lot of listeners are not aware of the originals. So they assume that the one they are hearing is the real thing. I like some of the remakes but some of it is just horrible..

Im a teenager, and even I think classic rock is better than modern stuff, I love classic because it has soul and good melodies and involved SKILL shock horror to most modern bands... although I have to say I do like the odd tune released by modern rock bands.

well, supposedly i'm biased, but yeah, "today's rock music" or the crap the the megacorps are feeding you is really bad. surely there is some good stuff being recorded underground. I can't afford to go dig it up though.
Pavement was in the 90's but beats a lot of classic rock.
Radiohead can't be left out of the equation.

I used to think that there was no other music other than classic rock but each generation has its own way of expressing itself through its music.

Yes! Classic rock, mainly 70's, was pure and simple. The mass marketing was unnessary; people simply knew what was good. Consider the fact that Grand Funk Railroad sold-out Shay stadum faster than the Beatles!

I can't distinguish one modern rock group from another these days. They really do all sound the same. The music is drivel. Take me back to the late 60's-70's. That's when rock really rocked!!!
