Its possible...I've been witness to it. (Well actually I'm from the US and what I witnessed is referring to over here)...
If someone is truly selfless and humble...they will not be corrupted..
Just b/c something hasn't happened...doesnt meant it won't.

Also...power will only corrupt the ones who at heart desire power. People do crazy things all the time to feel powerful...they do dumb things...mean things...and sometimes friendly...supportive things...

Someone who is selfless and humble and puts the interest in others before the interest of themselves truly...are often submissive...

Sorry to be cynical but you'll find that Most of the current bunch of MPs start off thinking that will do a damn good job without being corrupted by the system. They soon find out that the trappings of power corrupt absolutely and they ride the gravy train all the way to the bank.

Selfless humble people would not want to be politician. This is a job for the greedy selfish people.
The problem is that we should get rid of parliament altogether.

I have a suggestion for a new form of government, which you can read at

it's an oxymoron (is that the right word?). you can't have selfless, humble people in politics because the selfish arrogant tossers would walk all over them.
selfless, humble people only appear in politics at times of great change as leaders... gandhi and the dhalai lama are the only ones i can think of though. if there where more, they got lost as over a period of time, the power and responsibility of decision making would change them anyway. you can't be humble and selfless when you have to make tough decisions concerning alot of people. you have to be decisive and strong.

The pool of people that "feed" Parliament are generally from local borough and parish councils.

All you have to do to realise the problem is attend one of those meetings. The lack of quality of discussion, level of understanding, intelligence, professionalism and public representation is staggering.

Generally, they are just people from the area with time on their hands.

corruption starts at the lowest level of "if you approve my planning I'll approve yours" type of thing, and as people get away with it the stakes rise.

I have seen many local examples of strange or dubious decisions than COULD be explained by corruption.

Go you a local parish council meeting, you'll be surprised. just sit there thinking "these people control our areas", you'll come out so disillusioned.

i would be a good councillor. Will I ever get to be one ? No, because i would fight for the public opinion rather than looking after a couple of powerful landowners.

1) unlikely
2) yes

I trust poiticos as far as I can throw them. the very act of being selected as an MP means they have to compromise their values and follow the party line, even if they do not agree with it.
They all talk about 'democracy' yet we will never see a return to (for just ONE example) capital punishment, even though every poll shows that a majority of people want it back.
It is rare to find an independant MP, and on the odd occasion when one does get into parliment, he is totally ineffective until he starts to compromise with one side or the other.
MP's soon get entangled by 'snout in the trough' syndrome, and the most popular measures for MP's are those which vote for increased pay and pensions for.................MP's

If they are truly selfless and humble, then I do not believe they would be, or could be corrupted.
How can you tell?
Pick and choose those who will agree to less pay, or no pay all together.

Vote for the right candidates on election time. Only those that will truly serve the people with unquestionable integrity.

We can't - It's part of the genetic make up of anyone in politics. They get what they can and turn a blind eye to what they don't want to acknowledge... It's scandalous but it's a global problem as well as national.
