It's a 96 Chev. Beretta. Sometime when I drive up a hill or even sometimes regularly thru a straight street it acts like it wont switch gears. Whats going on?

It is either than your gearbox needs overhauling if it is a general problem with shifting, or you could need a new clutch, if you find that shifting is hard plus it is moving off sluggishly in 1st or 2nd gear

Low fluid level or vaccumn modulator going bad. Vaccumn leak. Sounds like it needs to be serviced. Fluid and filter changed.

pull out the Transmission dipstick...
the fluid should be red in color... make sure it doesnt have a burnt smell to it, and no little metal flakes... that could be a sign that the tranny is going bad....

go to your local parts store and get a quart of lucas transmission fluid.... this will help tighten the shifting in the tranny temporarily...

sounds like low fluid pressure. to check, bypass trans cooler in radiator with rubber line & clamps.drive 1-2 miles. better? cooler is plugged, bypass and install auxillary cooler, cost $40-$60 at auto zone. change fluid & filter too. these are main reasons for trans failure.
