The experiment is not specifically against mice. The reason mice (and rats) are used in research is because they are firstly economically viable, secondly the reproduce vary rapidly (21 day gestation, weaning in 18 days, sexually mature at 50 days) and because of their rapid development, diseases show up rapidly and can be studied (we also have a pretty good understanding of their anatomy). I work with mice in the research industry (my job is to make sure they are looked after and cared for). In order for the students to undertake this project, the school would have to apply for ethics and gain ethics approval. There are strict codes of ethics for all animals (with the exception of insects...). It is unfortunate that we have a need to use animals in research, however there are limitation to using computer models and tissue cultures.
While your brother is only studying the effects of diabetes on an animal model, researches are developing ways of treating diabetes, and to do this we need to understand the workings of it. It isnt viable to study the effects of diabetes on humans (and how many of you would be willing?), but there is a demand for a cure (there is no current cure, only a method of control). I don't always agree with using animals in research (they are sentient beings as far as I am concerned), but I understand the need for it, and the strict ethical guidelines.
BTW while I have to do my job, I at times hate what I do and don't do it because I "hate" mice. It is never easy to kill something just because it is "lower" than another spp. (this seems like a cop-out to me). Like with many jobs (such as nursing) you have to detensitise yourself to a degree or you'll never get any work done. I have had and have pet rats, cats, dogs, rabbits, fish. I love animals, hence why I spent all those years working towards a zoology degree and cleaning up their s**t, having to assist in a euth because can't be bothered getting their cat desexed and dont want it when its pregnant. Like the other person said, the next time you need to take paracetamol, insulin or any other medication thanks to the animals that helped bring it to you.

If a starving mice had to choose between eating a head of lettuce or an infant that is human being that could not defend itself. It would choose the infant.
Take time and see it for yourself. Ask your brother not to feed it and place some uncooked meat on one side an some lettuce on the other side of a sealed box with a clear view. They would not be so merciful as you. I understand where you are coming from mice seem harmless, but they are not. What if your brother turns out to be scientist and discovers the cure to diabetes. I have seen a small child with that decease. The next time you get sick and take any kind of over the counter medication. A mice got a sample of it before you did. As for as discrimination mice, rabbits, monkeys, cats, dogs, and many others get their fair share, even humans.

We do not hate mice and cruelty against mice is intolerable. However, they have many advantages for experimentation and learning. They are mammals, cheap and very procreative (hard to make extinct). For some reason, sacrificing them is easy for humans, as compared to sacrificing turtles, dogs or cats, for example.

Forget anything you have ever been told about Diabetes.

And get this - it has nothing to do with insulin, exercise, diet or anything else you've heard in the past. It's all based on latest breakthrough research that Big Pharma is going Stir Crazy to hide from you.

That sounds sick. I think that people should use more brain than that. Torturing a mice aint gonna solve "mac donalds-coca-cola-candy-diabet problems "

Torturing mices is degrading of one`s own intelligence.

Like racists, specieists give little or no thought to the feelings those of us who aren't stuck up humanoids might have. They think they are Gods gift to the world, but they are just animals like the rest of us. Screw them. If one crosses my path, I'll attack!
Sincerely,
