It is a well documented fact that the average American has little or no knowledge regarding world history, geography, politics, current affairs etc! For any Americans out there, do you agree with this statement or regard this as an unfair assumption?? PS - I am not anti American!!!

And while I agree with you I think its an unfair assumption for several reasons..
There are several countries that are ignorant as well...its often easy for those who live in europe and asia...countries who've had a vastly longer documented history...this country is a few hundred years old...how much do those countried know about america...
Also...most of the world history that people know of is about the the ones surrounding them...how truly knowledgeable are these about other civilizations history that does not relate their own country or surrounding region...
In general...you will find people every where that are more concerned with themselves...or what is immediate...
I think people are very ignorant about anything that goes beyond themselves...but not all americans are like that. I'm not anti anything or pro anything...

I ask you...Do you consider yourself smart...

***I dont mean to sound callous...b/c I agree...its just that...Its really very trying when the world criticizes americans for being igonrant for the lack of knowldege for things that relate to them...The stereotypes of Americans is lame thing...b/c its based on assumptions...

sadly as an american born citizen from a germanic heritage, i must admit that in comparison to the rest of the world's major nations we are idiots when it comes to our education !, we blow money on everything else but the education of our citizens ! but as it has always been, those in power and wealth make the rules to benefit themeselves and their prodogy, and not the masses. afterall by keeping the masses ignorant, they can better control them, and become wealthier and more powerful than ever off of the peasants ! and untill thru peaceful means, the peasants revolt and refor our educational system for all, nothing will change. also a confiscation of all wealth and even re distribution to all, if you work , you will have food, shelter and etc.

I think it's unfair for you to target JUST Americans because there are definitely countries worse off who don't have the education we at least have (if you're basing this purely on knowledge). However, in every society... there are a lot of idiots. Unfortunately, it's quite prevalent in the US. Thank you, Hickville.

I don't really believe that you should generalize, though, because it's really up to the individual whether they want to apply themselves or not. This is true EVERYWHERE, not just America.
I myself personally LOVE current affairs. Don't get me started on politics lest you want me to b*tch you out (if you're conservative/repub). *smiles*

It's funny though isn't it, how we happen to be one of the richest and most comfortable countries in the world, the one everyone seems to want to immigrate to. Hmmm,,,, pretty good for a bunch of dummies, wouldn't you say.

Ignorant people don't consider themselves ignorant. Most Americans claim they aren't ignorant. In all actuality, we're all ignorant to some degree.

First off, it isn't a "well documented fact". Our school kids are scoring lower than school kids from other areas.

In America, we educate everyone, which is something that most places cannot say. Also, the challenge in the American education system comes in college, in europe and euro modeled schools it comes in High School.

So, in trying to highlight our ignorance, you in face, proved your own. Thanks for showing up.

Many of us are too ignorant to know we're ignorant...we don't know what we don't know. Only 20% of the US population holds a passport, which suggests to me that 80% of us need to get out more.

It is basically true, and has an ampliative effect, so that I think many Americans think they are stupider than they really are. But then again, I am one, so what do I know?
